How the directory works, and what verified means.
A directory is only worth what its weakest listing. Here is exactly what we check and exactly what we do not.
What we check
The practice exists and is registered
A named person is responsible for the listing
Any professional body membership stated is stated by them, and shown as their claim
They are actually taking on clients
They have run at least one client book on NaijaPay
What we do not do
We do not rank practices by what they pay us, because they do not pay us for a listing. We do not accredit anybody, because that is not ours to give. We do not take a percentage of the fee you agree, and we are not a party to it.
A listing is an introduction. Do your own checks before you hand anybody your books, exactly as you would with any professional.
What to ask before you engage anybody
Which states do you file in?
PAYE is a state tax. A practice that has never dealt with your state authority will be learning on your account.
Who actually does the work?
Find out whether the partner you are meeting is the person who will touch your payroll, or whether it is a trainee in filing season.
What is the fee, and what is it for?
Ask what is included, what is billed separately and what happens in a month with an unusual event.
What happens if a filing is late?
A good answer tells you who is responsible and what they do about it. A vague answer tells you a lot.
